Cloth Bum Please Mum!

I am a cloth bum mum, changing nappies by day, washing nappies by night, my super power... saving the environment.

I made the decision to try cloth this time during my pregnancy, inspired by my 8 year old who came home from school one day very concerned about the amount of plastic in the ocean. As a lover of all sea creatures he begun to throw some worrying statistics at me. Do you know It can take 500 years for 1 nappy to decompose! A wet wipe can take 100 years! Scary right!

We are at risk, by 2040, of having more plastic in our oceans than fish! So with this in mind we made the decision to make a change, after all as a fourth time mum I have definitely used my disposable nappy quota.

We are nearly 3 months into our cloth journey and I can say I have learnt a lot. I know which material is most absorbent now, different liners, boosters and brands. I have definitely developed a problem for finding new, beautiful designs online (thanks to covid 19, online shopping mostly fills my days) and I have met a whole community of mums and dads online who help and support each other offering advice and support! Honestly, I wish I made the change sooner.

I have to admit, before starting, I felt daunted by the idea of washing loads of nappies every day and with the initial cost being so high that also prevented me from doing it before. However, this time round having a baby coincided with my birthday, so in true mum form, instead of getting lots of bubble bath (a normal go to gift) I requested a variety of nappies from family to try out and to be honest this saved us a huge amount.

As for the maintenance of cloth bums, it is relatively easy. I do a nappy wash every 2-3 days, hang them out either on a washing line or inside (if I do a night time load) and within a couple of hours they're dry ready to go again! Easy!

So if you are considering making the change and you have turned to the World Wide Web for experiences then I say do it, there really isn't a down side! It will save money in the long run, they're so much better for our planet and let's face it, they look cute!
